Today began like any other day: me, minding my business, trying to nap in peace while the small humans generated their usual level of chaos — somewhere between “mild earthquake” and “unregulated circus.”

But then… the Incident occurred.

I watched from my perch (the arm of the couch, my throne) as Jack, the tall one with the sticky fingers, ate his mac ’n cheese with the grace of a baby goat. I knew something was wrong when Hot Dog Lady kept staring at the tiny one, James, like he was defusing a grape‑shaped bomb.

And then it happened.

On.
My.
Couch.

MY couch.
The one I sleep on.
The one I shed on.
The one I have personally kneaded into the perfect shape with my own paws.

I gasped internally.
Externally, I blinked slowly — the feline equivalent of “you absolute fool.”

Dad noticed first. He made a noise like a wounded walrus.
Hot Dog Lady turned her head with the precision of a security robot.
I braced myself for the lecture.

She did not disappoint.

Soon, the cleaning machine was summoned — the loud, wet, screaming beast I despise. Jack was marched through a full training sequence like he was joining the Upholstery Marines. James hovered nearby, thrilled, as if this were some kind of carnival attraction.

They sprayed.
They scrubbed.
They vacuumed.
They dumped mysterious brown liquid into the sink.

And the whole time, I sat there, watching my kingdom be restored by two tiny apprentices who had no idea how close they came to being exiled from my realm.

To their credit, they did not cry.
They did not whine.
They even seemed to enjoy themselves.
Idiots.

Hot Dog Lady looked proud. Dad looked relieved.
I looked… inconvenienced.

But the couch is clean again.
My throne is restored.
Balance has returned.

For now.
